What is distinctive about the Griffith Bachelor of Arts is that in addition to providing exciting fields of study, it offers a signature experience in social enterprise. Here you take a sequence of courses in which you have placements and work on projects with organisations and businesses for the benefit of the community. This way you gain work-oriented, practical skills in research, problem solving, effective writing and communication in a range of creative media. As part of the signature experience, you also create a significant employment portfolio over the three years of your degree to show prospective employers when you graduate.
Fields of study (and award majors) include:
- Communication and Journalism: This field includes studies in public relations and journalism.
- Contemporary Society and Culture: This field includes studies in cultural sociology, globalisation and political economy.
- Creative Writing and Literature: This field includes studies in literature, publishing and creative writing.
- Creativity and Cultural Practice: This field includes studies in contemporary creative culture and the cultural industries.
- Film and Screen: This field includes studies in film, television, video and digital video.
- History and Cultural Heritage: This field includes studies in modern history, Indigenous studies and cultural heritage.
- Islamic Studies: This field includes studies in the history, culture and politics of Islam.
- Languages and Cultures: This field includes studies in Chinese, Indonesian, International English, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Spanish.
Bachelor of Arts/Graduate Diploma of Education - Secondary (Semester 1 intake only)
This combination of programs is intended for students who wish to complete a Bachelor of Arts degree and gain a teaching qualification.
In the first three years, students undertake the Bachelor of Arts. During this program students are required to undertake content studies in two teaching areas. In fourth year, students undertake the Graduate Diploma of Education - Secondary program at the Mt Gravatt or Gold Coast campus.
The combination of both programs provides professional preparation for teaching in school settings. It covers the theory and practice of teaching, concentrating on the characteristics of learners and teachers, and the social and educational contexts of education. The program includes education studies, curriculum studies in nominated teaching areas and professional experience in secondary schools.
Students are required to select two from the following teaching areas in the middle and senior school on the basis of content studies from their Bachelor of Arts degree (students should check the teaching areas that are available at the specific campus of study):
- Computer education
- Drama
- English
- Film and media
- LOTE (Languages other than English)
- Social science (History or Geography)
- Visual art
Graduates of these two programs will be eligible to apply for registration as a teacher from the Queensland College of Teachers.
Attendance
The Bachelor of Arts is offered full-time on campus at the Nathan campus. You may choose to study courses at other campuses if or where the program structure allows.
As a full-time student you will generally attend 10-15 hours of scheduled classes per week throughout the semester. Classes may be scheduled during the day and evening throughout the week.
Students may take a reduced study load. You will be classed as a part-time student if you enrol in less than 30 credit points per semester. This may affect entitlement to Centrelink benefits. International students must maintain a full-time study load.
